Humane Society of New York – Serving NYC’s Neediest Cats and Dogs

The Humane Society of New York (HSNY) has served New York City for more than a century, providing a safe haven for the city’s sick, injured, and homeless animals. When this private organization launched in 1904, it provided an avenue through which animal activists fought against the abuse of the city’s horses. Not only did these first Humane Society of New York members advocate for laws that would penalize the negligence of horse owners, but they also pushed for the installation of watering troughs throughout the city.

In subsequent years, the Humane Society of New York began to accrue enough funding to expand its animal welfare services. Soon, the organization opened its first adoption center and a clinic that provided free medical care to the city’s pets. HSNY has continued to grow in the decades since and continues its mission to help thousands of cats and dogs each year.

On a daily basis, HSNY meets the needs of hundreds of animals, many of whose owners have nowhere else to turn for assistance. HSNY provides low-cost veterinary services to pet owners, who turn to its clinic for everything from spay/neuter and other surgical procedures to advanced medical diagnostics. HSNY also runs a spay/neuter program for feral cats, the first initiative of its kind in the area.

Through the Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center, HSNY also works tirelessly to serve the many cats and dogs in need of adoption each year. Renowned for its individualized approach to adoption, HSNY evaluates, provides full medical care, trains, microchips, and spays/neuters each pet to prepare them for their forever homes. HSNY has a rigorous adoption process for all potential adopters to ensure that we always attempt to make the right match for them and their family. Until the animal is adopted, there are no time limits for their stay in our shelter.

Humane Society of New York strives to find the best home for each animal in need of a permanent, responsible, loving home, utilizing a combination of social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter to raise awareness about adoptable cats and dogs.
